The History of Apple Pie - Don't you wanna be mine?

They are back with a new single in October -

They were rather wonderful when they played the West End Centre in Aldershot on their last tour, despite clearly being nervous-

There was quite a small army of chaps gathered in front of  the bass-players area of the stage....

Ok this is the one I wanted to see. There are no words to do this justice - watch and be in awe...singing 3 notes at the same time...

Birdy - Lyric and Wildheart Theatre Company - Rich Mix London 20 September 2013

Just saw a preview of this show which is in the latter stage of rehearsal and really really enjoyed it. Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes burlesque, vaudaville, circus theatrics, the surreal, music and laughter. Ostensibly it's about a couple of youngsters who fall in love and the tribulations of the early years, post romance...her (Birdy) in particular. But the real star is the mayhem that surrounds them, courtesy of two mischievous anti-cherubs who morph into all sorts of problematic characters and maniacs; a cross-dressing organist; and a very physical, whirling, at times slightly out-of-control, stage set. Just like life, nothings perfect, it's clunky, frustrating, there's weird eroticism; awkward and hilarious sex; it often moves at breakneck speed but then hits a wall; and it's certainly the first time I've ever found a baby in my beard! Although this is a theatre company, and there is music from the organist and the two anti-cherubs who sing harmonies and play strings, melodica, mandolin, drums, kazoos (lots of kazoos ;-)) throughout - this is not so much a play or musical as a SHOW. So I can recommend this to hardcore-theatre-goers and/or anyone who just wants a bloody good night out. Oh I forgot to mention, despite the darkness at the root of the story, once the story is set up it is very very funny - laugh out loud funny - and alive with great set-pieces, none of which I am going to spoil for you.

Susanna Hoffs - Raining

I met Susanna Hoffs (and all of The Bangles) back in the 'Different Light' days and I've never forgotten what a likable and 'attitude-free' person she was. She was also absolutely tiny! Anyhow a vid with Susanna AND Rosanna Arquette is a major event for gentlemen of a certain age so here it is...

Purling Hiss - Paisley Montage (Richie Records/TestosterTunes)

On vinyl. Originally a limited cassette release that was made more limited when a box of ‘em were left on top of the tour van as the band burned out of town on an early tour. It’ll be available in stores on October 29, but you’ll likely have a chance to order it a little earlier from the label direct.

and just in case you've been asleep under a rock for the last five years, Purling Hiss was created by Mike Polizze, former guitar-hero of Birds of Maya. Initially it was his home recordings of ideas. They were incredible and released on vinyl by the cream of the underground labels Permanent Records, TestosterTunes, Mexican Summer, and Woodsist. All of these have been played on my shows. He then morphed PH into a full power trio and they were signed by Drag City for their 2013 release. The curious thing about them is that, despite having a R'n'R guitar-god in the ranks, the worse the recording quality, the more amazing they sound!

See what I mean?

Julie's Haircut - Ashram Equinox Trailer

Uncategorizable, but always excellent band - looks like new material will be appearing shortly - Ashram Equinox will be released by Woodworm Music and Santeria. It will be available through their mail order and on digital stores worldwide in October, while a physical edition (available as CD or LP + CD) will be distributed by Rough Trade in Europe in february 2014. A limited cassette edition will also be released by the american label Crash Symbols.

Oh and there are Italian live dates as well-

"If you happen to be in Italy on sunday 22nd september, we will present the album at the Musei Civici (Natural history museum) in Reggio Emilia, playing it live in its entireity. On that day at 8:44 pm in fact the Autumn Equinox will happen, one of the two moments during the year when day and night share exactly the same duration. The concert will start exactly at 8:44 and will feature visuals by Vj Klein, while the Museum will host a selection of works by Pasquale De Sensi, the talented artist that created all the illustrations for the cover art of “Ashram Equinox”. Opening at 7 pm with music selected by Ferruccio Quercetti (Cut/Covo Club. The Museum is in Via Spallanzani, 1 Reggio Emilia."

Knifeworld- Don't Land On Me

Superb Prog/Pop outfit and an absolute killer live prospect because these people can really play. You will have seen some of them in Cardiacs, Monsoon Bassoon, Chrome Hoof...anyway this is available as a DL - give them some money so we can have another record from them. Their label 'Believers Roast' has a lot of good acts, a fair few of which have been played in my shows.

Snarky Puppy - Family Dinner Volume 1 (again)

See my earlier post about this incredible project. Well they've done it again. Here is the second vid. A bossa-beauty from Magda, with a fantastic arrangement from Snarky Puppy. In a better world this is the number one single...

Hickoids - Cool Arrow (Saustex Records)

Texas Cow Punks are way more than that. I finally got to see them earlier this year and they were a great live band. Far more garage rock, psych and a front man that can incorporate whatever the hell is going on in the room into the lyrics. They also have a Texas sense of humour - see this vid for their new single from the album 'Hairy Chafin' Ape Suit' (ha ha haaaaaaaaaa)

Dick Wagner & The Frost - Sunshine (1967)

Fantastic fanmade vid for this single by possibly my fave band of Detroit royalty. By all accounts no-one could touch them live. Mr Wagner went on to save Alice Cooper and Lou Reed in the early 70's, and then wrote hits for all sorts of others thereafter.

Elizabeth - Yorkshire Day (Live)

Lovely drone into Psych blissout of a track

Monarch - Amplifire Death March

One of the masterpieces of the genre. French Female vocalist running vocs through acid-psych pedal chain. Astonishing pacing, and yes this track is just under one hour in length! Pop it on and turn up the bass and volume while you are surfing or ironing...you WILL be converted

Wet Nuns - Hanging

Great new video from this killer live act. We supported them early last year, not really knowing what to expect, and they burned the venue down! Not literaly but...well you know what I mean. They've always been very strong on imagery and humour so stick with this one as both start to ramp up. Debut album approaches as well...

Early Mammal - My Fire (Convoy Records)

I have been blown away by this promo twice today! Think Pink Floyd soundtrack work circa 1970 and Irmin Schmidt's incredible 3 album run of 'filmmusik' + 'Toy Planet' 1980-81. Yes THAT good! Eurorock pulses; a bit of SanFranjam; driving around mainland Europe in the early 70's in a lorry left over from the war, worried about the last generation's involvement...easily the best recording I've yet heard from them but, once again, nothing like their tremendous live show = valve amps-wall of cabs- everyone dies overdrive...but the grooves are still tight (their drummer is superb and I think the stand-in bass-player is his brother? tight/looseness abides)

Update - the cassette has been released but ltd edition of 50!

The Obits - Spun Out

This is just so damn catchy I'm gonna have to post it. First single from The Obits new album 'Bed and Bugs' out on Sub Pop now.

Black Luna

I absolutely adore this band. One of the French garage rock scene, they always look impossibly Rock and Roll. They just never drop the ball. I have no idea what is being discussed here but it still entertains.

Originally they were called Black Tears but had to change their name. I think the new one is actually better. Anyhow here is a sample of what they really do (it's with their old drummer but I really like this footage)-

Lucky Pierre - Surface Noise EP (Aidan Moffat)

Anything from former Arab Strap chaps is always worth hearing. Surface noise from charity shop-bought records does not sound like too scintilating an idea but Aidan Moffat (for 'tis he!) pulls it off here.

Wrekmeister Harmonies' performance at the Bohemian National Cemetery

Sorry about the fat screen but this film, whilst reluctant to behave, is so good. You'll really want to see this performed after you've seen it. The album is called "You've always meant so much to me" and it's out on Thrill Jockey now.

and the really good news is-

ok so here is the film-

Ufomammut add Zolle to the Magickal Mastery tour 2013

Zolle have been added as support WooHoo. Dates so far are in the vid.

Kanashimi no Belladonna (1973) - Film

Very very strange exploitation, occult, porn, animation that is somehow superb! Men come out of this very badly indeed (the sad excuse for a husband in particular). I don't want to spoil the surprises and spectacular artwork, because it is all about pacing. It starts very slowly, and is very down and depressing (and feminists will blow a gasket, with no little justification!) but stick with it because there are reasons for this. It's loosely based on a book called The Witch, and the Director (Eiichi Yamamoto) was seriously into Aubrey Beardsley at the time. If you can get past the muck this is a cult-classic.

OvO - Abisso album out 4th November 2013

Another outfit that went down a storm when I saw them live. Stefania's vocs are amazing from high-witchery to low satan-bowels...she covers the lot, in...er...black bile.
More info, it's out November 4th on Supernatural Cat, and just check out this-

ENOS Euro-tour with Mangoos and Rescue Ranger

These guys are great live. I saw them last winter and the bass player was up on the monitors for most of their set leading a communal headbanging session. They show a whole psych-film that they've made and they play along to it. There's synths and it is very heavy spacerock. A lady at said gig mistook me for a young person and threw me around the venue whilst half-strangling me for a considerable portion of their set. Her boyfriend was on crutches. This did not surprise me...

dates so far and more to come-

Smashing Prog outfit who's fan-made vids are quite something!

Oh I've just seen they're playing The Dublin Castle (Camden London) 13th October 2013!

The Dodos - Carrier - out now

Polyvinyl Record Company put out the most beautiful vinyl releases-

See?

Sonya Titus - Love Transfusion

This lady can really write a song. The first teaser track was so good it went straight into my next show. Same with this, the first single. Cannot wait to hear her debut album.

Esben & the Witch, Thought Forms, Teeth of the Sea tour Oct 13

Fantastic value-for-money triple-header. And here's a vid from Thought Forms the Shoe-noise-rock-gazers from Bristol way. People forget that, with all the sonic madness, they also write killer tunes.

Snarky Puppy - Family Dinner Volume 1

I have really grown to love this band. They are awesome players, but without pomp and with a lot of heart. Earlier this year they went to play at Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA - to give the place a boost. Officially "The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts center that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall". What actually happened was that this set REALLY KICKED OFF. It's already legendary, but now there's a CD, DVD and each monday they load a video of them backing the guest vocalists. This was the first one from last monday. Just listen to how SP support Shayna...and God knows how she managed to hold back for as long as she did but by the second chorus she is GONE baby. Stephen Critchley and I had this vid on heavy rotation last monday because there is just so much to take in. Best of all, when the song ends Shayna can't stop! It's a brilliant performance, and sound and filming are also superb (although that is a given with this band). If you don't yet know Snarky Puppy get ready to fall in love...right here we go...

Blue Oyster Cult - Live in Paris 1975

Great time-capsule from France 1975 when BoC were on fire (with R'n'R ha ha). Intellectual discussion (maybe, I don't speak French), the lyrics are really clear, but, best of all there is an IMMENSE version of ME262...best I've ever seen!

Riot Live 1981!

Riot were, for my money, one of the greats. They started out as a proto-band that no-one knew what to do with. After 2 albums of great music and shockingly bad production, and a major public bust-up with their label, they jumped ship to Elektra records who made the wise decision to just let them produce themselves. The result was 'Fire Down Under' which is a masterpiece. They rocked harder and faster than anyone else at the time BUT with incredible guitar soloing all over the shop. Anyway someone has found this gold - a whole gig from when they were at the top of their game. The punks didn't have chops, and the heavies had gotten a little flabby - Riot delivered the goods.

you really have to hear this on vinyl but nevertheless...
